The Lucky Ones

Sketchbook drawings by Mark Burrier

You have every right to be suspicious. Sketchbook collections are the dirty secret of the art world and the safety net of artists. Why produce new, meaningful work when I have a whole book of it here?

I used to only keep sketchbooks to write notes and phrases in so that I wouldn't forget them later. It was never a place to practice or experiment with new techniques. My friend Jeff keeps a vigilant sketchbook and has for years. Whenever I read them, I find so much depth and layers of thought. This is what a sketchbook should be. Pure thought. From brain to paper.

This work was taken from two books completed from spring through the end of summer 2005. What I like about these pages is that I made them without the intention of anyone ever seeing them. The few chosen I feel were successful in capturing something. That something I'm not sure of exactly. I present them to you in the hope that you find other people's thought processes as interesting as I do.
